Crane manufacturer fined after falling steel girder narrowly misses workers

Konecranes UK Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching reg.8(1)(c) of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It was fined £8000 and ordered to pay costs of £7529.

The company had been contracted to move an overhead runway from one end of a warehouse to the other. The workers attached slings to the structure but these failed, causing the beam to fall 14 metres to the ground, narrowly missing the workers and destroying a warehouse office (fortunately unoccupied at the time).
