Vegetable supplier fined for chemical incident

Emmett UK Ltd pleaded guilty to contravening Regulation 12 (1) of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and was fined £8,500 at Spalding Magistrates' Court. It was also ordered to pay full costs of £2,478.

In September 2009, an agency worker was cleaning food processing machinery when he accidentally mixed two cleaning chemicals which reacted together to produce a toxic gas.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), found that the company had failed to provide suitable and sufficient information and instruction to the worker about the risks from the incorrect use of chemicals.
